Hey, friends! In our home we get through a lot of popcorn and although it’s always delicious just being salty or sweet – or both – sometimes, we want it to look and taste a little bit more exciting. So on occasion, I like to make our popcorn extra special and add bits and pieces into it.

This popcorn recipe is called Mermaid Popcorn, because it has pastel coloured candy drizzled over it, pastel coloured mini marshmallows and shimmery pearl like sprinkles, and I found pastel coloured mermaid themed popcorn boxes that I’d bought last year in a sale. We ate ours watching [no surprises] Disney’s The Little Mermaid, shouting at Ursula and cheering on Prince Eric. It was easy and fun to make, and it looked so pretty too!

How to Make Mermaid Popcorn

  • Popcorn – I use Butterkist microwavable popcorn sachets
  • White Candy Melts – I use PME Bright White ones
  • Pink, Orange and Green Colourings – for the candy melts I use Colour Mill, because they’re oil based and so like the oils and fats in the chocolate. Using gel based on candy and chocolate doesn’t come out as well.
  • Mini Marshmallows – I got mine from Flying Tiger for £1
  • Pearl Sprinkles in Mermaid Pastel Colours

Equipment for Perfect Mermaid Popcorn Making

  • Piping Bag or resealable bag for candy melts
  • Scissors to snip hole in the end of bag
  • Tray to spread the popcorn out in, ready for coating
  • Microwavable bowl to melt the candy
  • Spoon to stir the colour into the candy and then the candy into the bag
  • Popcorn Boxes – I used Meri Meri Mermaid ones, to serve

Instructions for Creating Mermaid Popcorn

  • Pop the corn in the microwave and spread out in a tray evenly. My tray was about 20x30cm and fit a bag of popcorn perfectly.
  • Split candy melts into three portions. I used around 10 melts per colour.
  • Microwave candy melts and add drops of colour to them. Stir and add more drops until you achieve the colour you want.
  • Spoon mixture into piping bag and snip a small piece off the end.
  • Drizzle the mixture over the popcorn and leave to dry.
  • Repeat candy melts parts twice more using the remaining two colours.
  • Sprinkle marshmallows and sprinkles over and leave to set for fifteen minutes.
  • Divide into popcorn boxes and serve.
