Sure, we spend a HUGE amount of time enjoying the rides and the food, and the scenery at Walt Disney World – but that’s not all there is to do! For those who want something a little different, there are tours and special experiences like you couldn’t even begin to imagine. I’m a huge fan of Disney’s extra experiences, and one of our favourites was The Family Magic Tour.

SO WHAT IS THE FAMILY MAGIC TOUR?

In its simplest terms, it’s a scavenger hunt around the Magic Kingdom, with Mickey Mouse at the end. What could be more fun?!

We met a few characters in passing on the tour who stopped to interact with us, including the White Rabbit and Lady Tremaine from Cinderella!

Our backstory for the Family Magic Tour was that there was a big party after everyone went home after the park closed, and Captain Hook thought it would funny to hide some of his friend’s things throughout the Magic Kingdom. Mickey Mouse had asked us to go out and find them, and bring them back to him.

We toured the Magic Kingdom in a group, hunting for the list of items we needed, and along the way there were games and activities whilst we searched for each item, solving riddles and them popping it in our Cast Member’s bag.

Our Cast Member and Tour Leader was Megan, and Jensen fell in love with her – she was full of Disney Sunshine and he held her hand immediately when she offered it.

CHARACTERS ON THE TOUR

At the end of the tour, everyone in the group got to meet Talking Mickey in the Town Hall and have through photograph taken.

WENDY ON THE FAMILY MAGIC TOUR

The only disappointment we had was Wendy. The boys thought she was lovely – and we played a fun game with her trying to feed Tick Tock the crocodile, and he got to try on Captain Hook’s actual hook – but we’d originally booked because we heard you would meet Peter Pan and Peter was Jens’ favourite Disney character in the whole wide world. When we were told Wendy was there instead, he was more than a little bit crestfallen.

ARE THERE ANY AGE RESTRICTIONS?

No – this is a family tour – Jensen and Lyoto were 3 and 1 when we took the tour [Lyoto slept through quite a bit of it]. Just be aware there’s a lot of walking; it’s a walking tour.

HOW MUCH DOES THE FAMILY MAGIC TOUR COST?

The tour costs $39 each, regardless of age. It’s recommended for ages 4 to 10, but our boys were both younger and Jensen, at 3, LOVED it. If you’re under 16, you have to be accompanied by an adult.

WHERE DOES IT TAKE PLACE?

The Family Magic Tour takes place throughout the Magic Kingdom. We met at the Town Square Theatre where we were checked in, given stickers with our names on and some water.

Jensen was hoping to meet Peter Pan – but this day was Wendy! She was lovely though.

WHEN DOES IT TAKE PLACE?

The tour begins at 10am on Saturdays, Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays. Arrive 15 minutes before the tour – and if you need to cancel, remember to do this at least 2 days before or you’ll risk losing the entire cost.

HOW LONG IS THE FAMILY MAGIC TOUR?

Our tour was just under two and a half hours long. The length will vary according to how many are in your group and how long each activity takes.

HOW CAN I BOOK?

You can call (407) 939-8687 to book, or you can try each morning at the Town Square Theatre to see if there are any places available on that day.

POINTS TO NOTE ABOUT THE FAMILY MAGIC TOUR

You can read our recount of the tour here, but other things to consider are…

  • You need to buy a park ticket in addition to the tour booking.
  • There is a lot of walking, and it’s at the pace of your Cast Member to make sure everyone is where they need to be at certain points.
  • Wear your most comfortable shoes!Get ready to unleash your inner child. Even the most stiff-upper-lip people will find it impossible to resist joining in with the antics. At one point we were all skipping in a line through Adventureland singing “We’re following the leader” and playing Simon Says.
  • Don’t forget your camera!
  • Bring snacks – two hours is a long time to be walking if you’re little!
  • You’re going to see things in the Magic Kingdom you’ve never noticed before, and in a whole new way. Cast Members of this tour know all of the nooks and crannies – and water fountains, thankfully.
  • Use the toilet before you start the tour – we did have a rest stop but it was when we met Wendy and so toilet time meant less interaction.
  • If your child is quiet and reserved, they might be a little overshadowed by some of the louder, more confident children, especially if they’re small.
  • People dropped out as the tour went along – we started as a larger group and by the time we finished, only three other children remained.
