Bucket of Dirt ‘n’ Worms Desserts – perfect for using up leftover chocolate birthday cake!

Hey, friends! Before I get started, let me warn you that this is a leftovers post. There’s nothing fancy about it, and you can make it in minutes if you have leftover chocolate birthday cake like we did when we celebrated Hero turning 6. We always have birthday cake left over and so this time I decided to try and do a few things with it to make it more interesting over the next few days. This was attempt one, and it went down well! You could even make these at Hallowe’en for a creepy dessert.

To make your Bucket of Dirt ‘n’ Worms desserts, you will need:

Chocolate Cake and Frosting [leftover birthday cake – or a chocolate frosting topped cupcake]

Gummy Worms – I got the pretty rainbow ones from the Colin the Caterpillar Range at Marks and Spencer. They came with little rainbows too.

Edible Sugar Eyes – I used Wilton’s smallest – or you can make your own edible sugar eyes like we did before.

Chocolate Pebbles – ours were honeycomb and came with the cake, but you can use Maltesers, chocolate covered nuts or raisins – whatever you like.

Equipment Needed:

Next to nothing is needed for these – and you can make them in minutes.

I used Mini Galvanised Steel Buckets that I got for 75p each in the ASDA gardening aisle.

Mini spoons – I have some cute plastic ones that I use time and time again with smiley faces on from the Eats Amazing Shop.

Fork and bowl for fluffing up the frosting and cake together.

Fun Bug Themed Food

I don’t know why, but my boys are very fond of anything that has a face on it, and especially food that’s shaped like bugs – a few years ago I made little butterfly bruschetta and they thought they were the best snack ever.

How to make the Dirt ‘n’ Worms Dessert

It’s so quick – I think the longest part was trying to get the eyes to stick to the gummy worms! Fluff up the cake and frosting together – you want it to be light and fluffy in the bucket, not all compacted. Pop some in each bucket, add the eyes to the gummy caterpillars and add them to the buckets, head or tail first. Sprinkle in some chocolate pebbles of your choice, and serve with a little spoon.
