Hey, friends! Our Maui Time Party for the boys was probably one of my favourite events ever – the party food was so much put together too. So today I’m sharing one of the most fun and easiest – and I promise they really are – because my husband couldn’t actually believe that I’d made them [how rude, haha] treats that we had fun creating. These are our Heart of Te Fiti Biscuits!

Disney’s Moana

Disney’s Moana is one of our favourite Disney Movies. The animation, the cast, the music; it’s brilliant! I don’t think there’s anyone who’s seen it and hasn’t fallen in love with it, or learned the words to, “You’re Welcome” and pretended to be Maui! It’s the story of Moana, a young Polynesian islander who is being raised to take over her father and become the leader of their island – an island which is being drained of life through a mysterious force. No one has left the island for many years and gone beyond the reef, but she’s constantly drawn to the sea despite not actually knowing that their people were once ocean-roaming wayfinders. Moana is the story of how she discovers herself and brings life to her island again. I get goosebumps just thinking about it – and then I can’t get “Hey it’s okay…” out of my head.

What is the Heart of Te Fiti?

Te Fiti’s Heart was the source of all life on the Island and in the Ocean. Her heart looks like a green swirly stone with carvings. So when Maui took it – trying to get humans to love him, it had a knock-on effect and drained the life from the Island. Everything was dying and Moana realised it was her destiny to find Maui, get him to Tē Ka and return the heart of Te Fiti to save her people. Easier said than done.

Who is Te Fiti in Moana?

Te Fiti is the life-giving Goddess turned fire demon Tē Ka, thanks to Maui the Demi-God stealing her heart, trying to impress us humans and make us love him. Te Fiti became heartless, [both figuratively and literally] incensed and filled with rage, turning her from a lush green, floral dusted beauty into a black and red volcanic monster. As with most Disney films, love prevails and Te Fiti returns to her normal, botanical self by the end. These cookies are for her, awww.

Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Metal Mixing Spoon
  • Cling Film
  • Rolling Pin
  • Baking Tray
  • Greaseproof Baking Paper
  • Sharp Knife
  • Microwaveable Bowl

Ingredients

You will need:

  • 100 g Butter
  • 100 g Caster Sugar
  • 1 Egg
  • 370 g Plain Flour
  • 2 Single Bars of Dairy Milk Chocolate
  • Sugar Flowers and Sprinkles

Instructions

Heart of Tefiti Biscuit Recipe

  • I went with the same biscuit recipe that never fails. If I need more, I double the measurements to suit.
  • Leave the butter out to settle to room temperature so it’s softer.
  • Cream the butter and sugar together.
  • Beat the egg and add gradually as you mix
  • Sieve in the flour slowly and mix to a dough.
  • You’ll need to use your hands!
  • Split the dough in two.

Now you have the biscuit dough, here’s how to make them into Heart of Te Fiti Biscuits

  • Colour each part the shade you’d like. I used green and then mixed royal blue and green together for the darker green. Wear gloves if you don’t want green hands!
  • Wrap each ball of dough, which will look like playdoh now, in clingfilm and refrigerate for at least 4 hours
  • Remove the clingfilm and roll each colour to a thickness of about 3mm.
  • Lay the two colours on top of each other and cut one edge flat.
  • This will be the start of your roll.
  • Roll from the straight edge slowly using the clingfilm to ensure a tight roll.
  • Cover your biscuit roll in cling film like a sausage and refrigerate for at least another hour so it’s easier to cut!
  • Remove from fridge and cling film and cut into slices as thick as you’d like your cookies.
  • Lay on baking paper covered tray and bake at Gas Mark 6 for 12 minutes.
  • Keep an eye on them so they don’t brown.

Decorating the Heart of Te Fiti Biscuits

  • Once the cookies are cooled completely, you can add the flowers.
  • Melt your chocolate in the microwave [or however you prefer]. I used two bars of Dairy Milk and broke them into pieces in a microwaveable glass bowl. I microwave for one minute and then stir until all the lumps have gone. Do not microwave more or you’ll have tacky, grainy chocolate.
  • Dip the edge of the biscuit into the chocolate and roll from side to side, then place on baking paper carefully.
  • Once all of the biscuits are dipped, gently add the sugar flowers and sprinkles. You can add as many as you like until you’re happy that they’re suitably Moana like!
  • Leave to set and enjoy!
